Apparently, there isn’t anyone who doesn’t know how many steps they should take each day to lose weight, but it turns out there’s a new method that burns more fat. So how does it work?
If you’re used to counting 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy, it might be time to rethink. A new and seemingly simple walking trend taking over TikTok promises much better results – in less time, and with much less strain on the body.
And no, it’s not a gimmick. This is a scientifically based method praised by both fitness and medical experts.
The method is led by fitness content creator Eugene Tiao, who claims that the "Japanese Walking Method" provides 10 times the health benefits of 10,000 steps a day – all in just half an hour, four times a week.
So what does it include?
It involves low- to moderate-intensity interval walking, divided into 5 cycles of:
3 minutes of brisk walking (about 70% of maximum heart rate)
3 minutes of slow walking (about 40% of maximum heart rate)
It’s important to note that even during brisk walking, you should maintain a pace that allows you to hold a conversation – this is not running.
Benefits: Less strain, more health
Walking is considered a moderate- and low-intensity workout that does not put unnecessary strain on joints such as the knees, ankles, and hips – unlike running or jump training. Therefore, it is especially suitable for people with movement limitations, chronic pain, or excess weight.
In addition, the interval method contributes to improved endurance, more efficient fat burning, blood sugar regulation, and strengthening of the cardiovascular system.
The Japanese Walking Method proves that you don’t always have to “chase the numbers.” Instead of constantly counting steps, a short, focused, scientifically based walk can lead to much more impressive results. And sometimes, all it takes to start is simply stepping out the door and taking the first step.
