“Climates and Carpets” exhibition to open at Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum

An international exhibition titled “Climates and Carpets” will open at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum on November 15, in connection with the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Co-organized by the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan and the Museum, the exhibition will feature works inspired by Azerbaijani carpet weaving, showcasing creations by artists from Azerbaijan, the USA, the UAE, Mexico, and Russia.

Favorable climate conditions and the captivating nature of Azerbaijan have played a significant role in the emergence and development of the ancient folk art of carpet weaving. Eco-friendly, colorful, and rich-patterned carpets mirror all the beauties of Azerbaijani nature. The exhibition aims to draw attention to the importance of combating climate change and promoting a healthy lifestyle through artworks created in new techniques by contemporary artists, based on ancient traditions. It also calls for solutions to ecological problems and the protection of the environment.

The exhibition will feature a collaborative work, Born in Flames, by famous Russian actress, director, artist, singer, and TV presenter Natalya Bochkareva. Moreover, Dr. Nnenna Okore (Chicago), a professor at North Park University, Mexican artist Pedro Cesar Peralta, artist and founder of the YARAT Contemporary Art Space and CHELEBI brand Aida Mahmudova, Honoured Artists Taryer Bashirov and Faig Ahmed, Honoured Worker of Culture Elmira Abbasly, artists Mammad Rashidov, Milena Nabiyeva, Mahar Maharramov, Tarana Aliyeva, and students from Integration Training Boarding School No. 11 in Bilgah settlement will participate in this international project. The diverse art pieces, made from various recycled materials such as glass, wool, metal, bioplastics, cheesecloth, fibers, sawdust, etc., will be presented.

The opening ceremony will feature the cutting of the loom carpet Green World by Honoured Artist Taryer Bashirov, dedicated to COP29 and woven in the Traditional Technology Department of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum. Furthermore, members of the Women’s Union of the United Arab Emirates will conduct masterclasses on weaving.

The exhibition will run until November 30.
