Russia’s recent hybrid attacks target not only state borders but also the unity of peoples, the strength of diasporas, and their national spirit, aiming to undermine them, said Daniel Tecu, President of the World Romanian Associations Federation, in an interview with AZERTAC’s special correspondent in Romania.
Commenting on the attacks against members of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Yekaterinburg, Tecu said: “This is a deeply regrettable incident. We are witnessing not only physical attacks by Russia but also psychological and informational assaults. The Romanian diaspora has also been a victim of these attacks, sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly. Russia attempts to influence Romanians in Europe through large-scale disinformation and propaganda campaigns. It presents itself as an ‘ideal world’ while discrediting democratic values. The goal is clear: to undermine faith in European values, fragment societies, and sow division among diasporas. Russia’s hybrid attacks target not only Romania but also its diaspora. This is no longer just an information war - it’s a matter of national security. The recent attacks on the Azerbaijani diaspora demonstrate how real this threat is.”
Tecu highlighted the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Romania, particularly in the energy sector: “Romania seeks to diversify its gas supply, and Azerbaijan is a key exporter. Initiatives like the Southern Gas Corridor and the AGRI project form the foundation of this cooperation. Additionally, there is mutually beneficial collaboration in culture, education, and tourism.”
He emphasized the significant potential for cooperation between the diasporas of both countries, such as sharing experiences in advocating for political rights, organizing cultural events, and implementing joint projects. Solidarity is crucial, especially in protecting migrant rights, combating discrimination, and engaging in joint lobbying efforts.
Tecu concluded: “Together, we are stronger. Cooperation between the Azerbaijani and Romanian diasporas is not only beneficial but essential. To counter pressures from powers like Russia, we need closer solidarity, joint events, and cultural and political projects. We must support each other and unite our voices. Only through this can we strengthen our positions in Europe.”
