Trees are like people: they are born, live, grow old and die. Some even become extinct after a certain time. But some of the trees that bear witness to the oldest dates live to this day.
The Sarv-e Abarkuh tree is popularly known as the Mediterranean Cypress and is believed to be around 1,500 years old. According to legend, this tree was planted by the prophet Zoroaster himself. Azerbaijani scientist Zaur Aliyev also conducted a lot of research on the tree.
He notes that many historians have written that Zoroaster planted a tree called Sarv-e Abarkuh near the Mediterranean Sea. According to him, it is also written in the sources that Zoroaster planted 4 cypress trees in Ateshgah, which is one of the ancient temples in our capital, Surakhani region. When the Arabs invaded Azerbaijan, they removed these trees and took them to Baghdad.
Prophet Zoroaster attached great importance to planting trees. In his religious-philosophical views, trees and flowers were considered success, happiness and bliss.
