Russian insurer AlfaStrakhovanie has completed a full insurance payment for the Embraer 190 aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), which crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, said Ilya Kabachnik, Deputy CEO of AlfaStrakhovanie for Aviation and Space Insurance.

In a statement to Interfax, Ilya Kabachnik confirmed that the payment was made in February.

"The Embraer 190 aircraft of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) that crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau, as well as the carrier's liability to passengers, were insured by AlfaStrakhovanie. The main portion of the risk was reinsured by the Russian National Reinsurance Company (RNPK). The payment for the aircraft, in the amount of the full insurance sum, was made in February," he added.

Kabachnik explained that while the investigation into the incident continues, AlfaStrakhovanie had sufficient information to process the claim. He emphasized that the primary factor for the payout was the undeniable loss of the aircraft.

“Since risks of war and terrorism were also insured, the airline will receive compensation in any case,” he emphasized.

The company said that the calculation of damages to passengers and payments to victims and their legal representatives under the carrier's liability insurance began in January and is still progressing.
