Chances flowed freely in Miami, but none of the 36 attempts on goal found the back of the net. The point ensured that Colombia, who defeated Uzbekistan and DR Congo in their first two matches, finished top of the group, while Portugal advanced as runners-up.
The tone for the match was set in the very first minute, as Luis Diaz's deflected shot was headed just over the bar by Jhon Cordoba. Cordoba had the next chance as well, brushing off Bruno Fernandes on his way to goal before unleashing a shot, but Diogo Costa produced a strong save with his right hand.
Colombia continued to press and came even closer with their next attack. James Rodriguez created space on the edge of the penalty area before threading a superb reverse pass to Jhon Arias. The Palmeiras winger charged into the box and drilled a shot toward the bottom corner, only for Ruben Neves to clear the ball off the goal line.
That opportunity sparked Portugal into action, and they almost took the lead themselves. Joao Cancelo cut the ball back for Bruno Fernandes, who took a touch before unleashing a powerful effort from 12 yards, but Camilo Vargas denied him with an excellent save. Joao Felix then threatened, breaking behind the Colombian defense before volleying over the crossbar.
Colombia continued to create the better chances after the break and should have opened the scoring just before the hour mark. Santiago Arias received the ball on the right and cut it back for substitute Richard Rios, whose side-footed effort flashed just wide of the near post.
Davinson Sanchez thought he had won it for Colombia in stoppage time when he headed home an inch-perfect cross from Juan Quintero. However, the celebrations were cut short by the assistant referee's offside flag.
Second place means Portugal will face Croatia in Toronto on 3 July. Colombia, meanwhile, will take on Ghana in Kansas City a day later.
