Azerbaijan’s pressing landmine problem was highlighted at the 16th Social Business Day international conference, held under the theme "Social Business: The Language of Peace in a Fractured World," in Savar, Bangladesh, on June 27–29.
The event, jointly organized by the Yunus Social Business Center and the Grameen Group, featured a panel discussion titled "Nurturing the Next Generation of Women Entrepreneurs and Leaders."
Addressing the panel, Ayseba Umutlu, a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF), briefed participants on the landmine problem in Azerbaijan, the importance of the country’s ongoing restoration efforts in its liberated territories, ensuring the safe return of former internally displaced persons, and the role of women in this process.
She noted that more than 1.5 million landmines have been planted in Azerbaijan. She also highlighted the crucial role of Azerbaijani women in the country’s demining operations, noting that female deminers have cleared nearly 800 hectares of land, neutralizing 115 anti-personnel mines, 295 anti-tank mines, and more than 400 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO).
