As a result of Armenia's ongoing mine terror, innocent people are losing their lives and health. Today, as a result of mine explosions in Jabrayil and Aghdam, four Azerbaijani citizens, including children, were seriously injured. This tragedy once again shows that the mine danger in the region still remains, and the lives of innocent people are constantly under threat, reads the appeal of the Ombudsperson of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva against the backdrop of mine incidents in the Jabrayil and Aghdam regions, Report informs.
"Since 2020, 392 people have been killed or injured as a result of mines laid by the Armenian side, as well as unexploded ordnance. This is a serious problem that affects not only the physical, but also the psychological and social condition of people.
Mines laid in our territories during the occupation pose a serious threat to the establishment of lasting peace in the region. International cooperation and assistance are essential to prevent this danger.
At the same time, serious consideration of the humanitarian situation in the territories contaminated by mines by Armenia and holding it accountable under international law remains an important obligation to the relevant international organizations. The deliberate laying of mines leads to serious human rights violations and impedes the restoration of peace and security in the region.
As the Ombudsperson, I call on the international community to recognize the urgency of demining activities, support Azerbaijan's ongoing demining efforts, and hold Armenia accountable for the deliberate and large-scale mining of Azerbaijani territories," the statement says.
