Polish political scientist: Azerbaijan shares goals of Europe’s ecological agenda

Every cubic meter of Azerbaijani gas bought by any European country serves Polish interests. This is even more actual from the point of view of European ecological agenda because the general line and its goals are shared by Azerbaijan which set up ambitious plans of green transition, Polish political scientist and professor at the Department of History and International Relations of Saint Joseph University of Beirut, Jakub Korejba, told Report.

“The more Italy, Bulgaria or Hungary buys from Baku, the less they buy from Moscow and this leads to minimize political risks to Poland. That’s why Warsaw sees the relation with Baku in a wider context: more Azerbaijani resources on European market means not only more prosperity but more security,” he said.

He added that reaching the European average of social and economic development in the horizon of the actual generation is possible without a stable and affordable access to energy: “This means, that not only Poland, but the whole Central Europe will not realize their strategic goals without a strategic partnership with Baku.”

“Certainly, getting energy from other countries is technically possible, but from the strategic point of view, Azerbaijan is the optimal partner - the richer and stronger Azerbaijan is - the more it fits with Polish interests also from political point of view.

Getting energy from other countries and regions proved to be either economically unprofitable or politically risky. For example: paying Russia or Iran for its oil and gas represents a strategic and moral dilemma for countries like Poland, while such an exchange with Baku is a pure pleasure: you not only get the commodity you need but you know, that you paid for it to the country that shares common strategic vision with you. That’s why Warsaw sees the relation with Baku in a wider context,” he added.

This is even more actual from the point of view of European ecological agenda because the general line and its goals are shared by Azerbaijan which set up ambitious plans of green transition, the expert noted. Azerbaijan will host the next session of the UN Climate Change Conference COP29, which makes it expected that green trends in the country will strengthen.

“Obviously, Azerbaijan is such a regional leader and no just order in South Caucasus and Central Asia is possible without it. No mutually profitable cooperation between those regions and Europe is possible without Baku too. That’s why, Poland seeks to strengthen not only bilateral relations but building a wider strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and all EU countries,” he concluded.
