Roy Cohen highlights the importance of keeping the mind active, stating, 'Being busy keeps me happy.'
Roy Cohen, the 101-year-old former CEO of a pharmaceutical company, recently shared his secrets to a long and healthy life in an interview with Business Insider. Cohen attributes his longevity to a combination of a strict diet, regular exercise, and keeping his mind active.
Born in 1922 on a farm without electricity or running water, Cohen faced adverse living conditions from a young age. His determination led him to obtain a scholarship to study microbiology at an agricultural university. He later completed a master's degree in biochemistry and nutrition, which allowed him to enter the pharmaceutical industry. Over the years, Cohen climbed the ranks to become a CEO, retiring at the age of 81 after a career.
For the past two decades, Cohen remained active with a daily exercise routine. He maintains an exercise regimen that includes walking and 20-minute leg-strengthening sessions. "I keep myself in shape, mentally and physically," he said. Even though he no longer performs demanding tasks like he did during his working years, physical activity continues to be a part of his life.
Cohen is strict with his diet, firmly avoiding processed foods and beef, which he considers essential for preserving his health. His diet is based on the Mediterranean diet, characterized by the regular consumption of fresh fish, vegetables, and olive oil. He emphasizes the importance of iron, zinc, and vitamin B12 for physical well-being. "If I want to snack on something, I eat a piece of cauliflower, a carrot, or a red pepper. I eat a lot of cabbage and salad," Cohen told Business Insider.
In addition to physical health, Cohen emphasizes the importance of keeping the mind active. He believes that mental engagement is a key factor in achieving longevity. "I keep a record of all my finances. I take care of all the details before they arise. That keeps my mind in shape," he stated. Cohen often makes repairs in his home and avoids staying still, understanding the importance of staying busy.
A positive attitude is also important to Cohen. "People allow unimportant things to depress them, but you can't afford to be angry or jealous all the time," he said. Cultivating a positive mindset in the face of life's adversities helps reduce stress and improves mental and emotional health.
Cohen's life story is an example of how education and effort can transform a life. From humble beginnings, his dedication to work and commitment to health have contributed to his longevity. He is the father of three children and the grandfather of six grandchildren.
