Three years have passed since the liberation of the Sugovushan and Talish villages of Azerbaijan's Tartar district from the occupation of the Armenian Armed Forces, XQ informs.

On October 3, 2020, the Azerbaijani Army cleared both villages of Armenian occupiers.

On the same day, the glorious Azerbaijani tricolor was hoisted in Sugovushan and Talish.

In 1992, the Aghdara district was abolished, and its territory was divided between the neighboring Aghdam, Tartar, and Kalbajar districts. The village, whose ancient name was Sugovushan, was renamed Madagiz during the Soviet era and is one of the settlements included in the Tartar district.

Sugovushan was first liberated by the Azerbaijani Army in 1991-1992. However, in April 1994, it was re-occupied by Armenia.

Sugovushan water reservoir and Sugovushan-1 hydroelectric power station are located in the village. After occupying Sugovushan, the Armenians established military units here. Military unit No. 49971 was considered one of the best military units of the Armenian Army in Karabakh. In addition, military unit No. 33651, designated by the Armenian Army as the "6th Defense District", also held a position in Sugovushan.

President of Azerbaijan and victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev announced that Sugovushan was liberated from Armenian occupation on October 3, 2020. Then the Supreme Commander-in-Chief congratulated Major General Hikmat Hasanov, who commanded the 1st Army Corps at that time, on the liberation of Sugovushan.

The battle of Sugovushan is considered to be one of the most important battles of the Azerbaijani Army on the northeastern front in the Second Karabakh War. During the fighting in the direction of Sugovushan-Aghdara, four tanks of the 77th tank battalion of the Armenian Armed Forces were destroyed, and three tanks were taken as trophies.

As a result of artillery strikes by Azerbaijani troops on the defense area of the 5th Destroyer Regiment of the Armenian Armed Forces in the direction of Aghdara, four vehicles of the regiment were destroyed, and many servicemen were killed and wounded. Several units of the 5th Destroyer Regiment fled the battlefield.

Sugovushan's liberation from the enemy ensured water supplies from Sugovushan reservoir to Tartar, Goranboy, and Yevlakh districts, which restored ecological balance.

On the legislative initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, the bill "On renaming the village of Madagiz in the Tartar district of Azerbaijan as Sugovushan" was sent to the Milli Majlis (Parliament). The bill was discussed and adopted at the plenary session on October 6, 2020.

Then, President Ilham Aliyev signed the bill. According to the document, Madagiz village within the Chayli village administrative district of Tartar district was renamed Sugovushan village.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev raised the flag in Sugovushan settlement and Talish village of Tartar district on October 3.

The "Sugovushan-1" and "Sugovushan-2" small hydropower plants have been inaugurated after renovation.

Since January 2022, the drinking water supply has been restored to the Sugovushan settlement and the Talish village of the Tartar district.

On March 20, 2022, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva lit the holiday bonfire in Sugovushan settlement, Tartar district. The head of state then congratulated the people of Azerbaijan on the Novruz holiday.

On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva laid the foundation of a new mosque to be built in the Sugovushan settlement of Tartar district.

Later, military unit No. "N" of the Ministry of Defense was opened in the Sugovushan settlement. President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev, and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the opening.

The foundation of the tourism complex to be created based on the Tourism Development Concept has been laid in the Sugovushan settlement. President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva participated in the event.

In 2021, the first rowing training session organized by the Azerbaijan Rowing and Canoe Federation in the Sugovushan settlement was officially opened. President Ilham Aliyev and first lady Mehriban Aliyeva participated in the opening ceremony.

On March 18, 2023, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, and their daughter Arzu Aliyeva participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the residential area in the Sugovushan settlement. A total of 190 apartments comprised of 25 one-room, 80 two-room, 75 three-room, and 10 four-room ones will be built in the area of 2 hectares. President Ilham Aliyev laid a foundation stone for the residential area.

On the same day, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, and their daughter Arzu Aliyeva viewed the progress of works carried out in the Talish village of the Tartar district. The head of state and the First Lady first viewed the Memorial stone in the Talish village. The valiant Azerbaijani Army under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev liberated this strategic area from Armenia on October 3, 2020. At one of the high points in the Talish village, a Memorial stone was installed on which the text of the tweet shared by the Commander-in-Chief was engraved on the day the area was liberated from occupation.

On October 4, 2021, the head of state raised the national flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the Flag Square in the Talish village. As part of the first stage of the repair and restoration works carried out in the village, landscaping works were carried out in Flag Square.

The head of state and the First Lady viewed the conditions created in the two-storey administrative building, the kindergarten, and the two-storey building of the 78-seat school.

The President of Azerbaijan lit the Novruz bonfire in the Talish village and congratulated the people of Azerbaijan on the occasion of the holiday.

Then, President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, and their daughter Arzu Aliyeva familiarized themselves with the conditions created in the Club community center. The head of state and the First Lady got acquainted with the repair and restoration works carried out in the private houses in the Talish village. It was reported that 20 houses were restored and reconstructed in the first stage. As part of the Great Return Program, on March 16, 20 families living in temporary residential areas in Baku, Tartar, Samukh, and Goranboy were relocated to the Talish village of Tartar district.

President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, and their daughter Arzu Aliyeva visited the house of villager Ayyub Akbarov.

According to the relevant decrees signed by President Ilham Aliyev on December 29, 2020, and June 24, 2021, a group of servicemen was awarded the medal "For the liberation of Sugovushan."

Along with Sugovushan and Talish villages, Mehdili, Chakhirli, Ashagi Maralyan, Shaybay, Guyjag villages of Jabrayil district, and Ashagi Abdurrahmanli village of Fuzuli district were liberated from the occupation of the Armenian Armed Forces on October 3.
