Environmental protection and efficient use of natural resources are among the key priorities of CJSC “Baku Steel Company” (BSC) activities. The company, which continuously supports environmental projects, has been awarded by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MENR).
BSC was recognized as the “Best Partner” in tree-planting initiatives under the “Green Future” platform at the event where the MENR awarded organizations for their contributions to solving environmental issues in 2024. The award was presented by Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev.
In 2024, as part of initiatives under the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), BSC planted 1,250 trees, including seedlings of Eldar pine listed in the “Red Book of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” as well as olive trees, on a 2-hectare area in Mushfigabad, Garadagh district. Additionally, 500 boxwood trees were planted on the territory of the Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park.
BSC implemented other environmentally oriented projects in previous years in addition to its efforts in replanting trees. For instance, last year in the anticipation of COP29, BSC organized “Baku Steel Art 2024”, an international metal symposium, in cooperation with QGallery. The goal of this symposium was to demonstrate that art and metallurgy could serve as catalysts for environmental change and sustainable development. As part of the “Baku Steel Art 2024” symposium, an exhibition was held featuring artworks created from BSC’s products and scrap waste, with the participation of 12 artists from 7 countries (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Romania, Israel, Bulgaria, and India).
BSC also supports development of renewable energy initiatives. Under the agreement signed within the framework of COP29, BSC and “Clean Energy Jabrayil” LLC agreed on the supply of solar energy. Two solar power plants, “Shams” and “Horizon,” each with a capacity of 50 MW, will be constructed in the Soltanli village of Jabrayil. “Clean Energy Jabrayil” LLC will supply BSC’s production sites with renewable energy via the central grid network. This partnership will contribute to accelerating the country’s transition to green energy.
BSC is committed to actively adopt innovative and sustainable solutions, including the digitalization of its current production processes. These efforts allow the company to improve operational efficiency, enhance safety measures, and reduce its environmental footprint, thereby supporting the advancement of Azerbaijan’s metallurgical industry.
