A railway worker has died after being hit by a train in Rubiero, near Reggio Emilia, according to ANSA.
Carabinieri police are investigating the incident that killed on Wednesday night the employee of Mercitalia, which is owned by Italy's State-controlled railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS).
According to preliminary investigations, the man was walking along the tracks to reach the station after finishing his work shift.
He probably got too close to the tracks and was hit by the regional train, according to investigative sources.
Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini expressed "deep sorrow" for the deadly incident, voicing his condolences and asking for a detailed report in a note issued late Wednesday by the transport ministry.
