"I was shocked when I read about the Khojaly genocide. The biggest irony is that Armenia denies it," Stephen Brooks, an associate professor at the US National Defense University, said in a statement to Report.

The academic called the massacre committed by Armenia in Khojaly one of the most unimaginable atrocities in history: "My speech at the conference dedicated to the Khojaly genocide was about moral theories that try to explain right and wrong. Despite all these theories, I still cannot understand what happened. I wish I could give a logical answer based on theories as to why this horror would happen."

Brooks noted that a nation with ethical values and national identity would not commit such a crime against another:

"In the 21st century, civilians are still being killed, and this, unfortunately, shows how deep the evil inside a person is. At the same time, it reveals a flaw in the system of international relations. States act mainly in their own interests, but this is often not based on a sense of morality. If this had happened to Armenian citizens, they would not have remained silent. This again confirms what I said - thinking about one's own interests is selfishness. The main problem is the lack of humanity and compassion."
