Azerbaijan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov has met with Khaled El-Enany, candidate for the post of the
Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the current issues on the agenda of cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNESCO, Azerbaijan's position, the initiatives put forward by the country, as well as regional issues.
Noting that Azerbaijan has made significant contributions to the activities of UNESCO, including the development and promotion of intercultural dialogue during its membership of the organization, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov highlighted the importance of the "Baku Process", educational and humanitarian initiatives. "We have presented our recommendations on the issues that the Egyptian candidate will consider relevant to include in the election program," the minister underlined.
FM Bayramov provided insight into the history of the past Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, emphasizing the fact of occupation of Azerbaijani territories, as well as the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also highlighted the destruction of the Azerbaijan's cultural heritage by Armenia. "Despite the calls that have been made to UNESCO for more than 20 years to register the destruction caused by Armenia by the UNESCO mission and organize a visit to the territories of Azerbaijan, Armenia obstructed the mission, which is also recorded in the UNESCO report of 2005.
The Azerbaijani diplomat wished Khaled El-Enany success in the election campaign.
The parties also discussed other issues of mutual concern.
