Security issues in the South Caucasus region cannot be addressed without Azerbaijan's participation, Fuad Huseynaliyev, director of the Report news agency, said speaking on air of the CBC TV channel, commenting on the meeting planned for today in the EU-US-Armenia format in Brussels.

According to him, recent calls from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev indicate that the US and the European Union are concerned about the position of official Baku on this matter.

"Azerbaijan's position was actually based on certain additional information that this meeting would not take place without influencing Azerbaijani-Armenian relations. Official Baku expressed concern about this at various venues. Security issues in the region cannot be discussed without involving Azerbaijan. Now the main issue for establishing a peaceful life in the South Caucasus region is the conclusion of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia," he said.

Fuad Huseynaliyev noted that in the context of signing the peace treaty, holding a meeting at which security for Armenia and the possibility of military cooperation with it could be discussed would have a negative impact on the process.

"Azerbaijan stated at the end of the 44-day war that peace with Armenia should be concluded in a short time. The fourth year has passed, but Armenia, under various excuses, does not resolve this issue, talks about some uncoordinated issues. We know that the peace agreement is based on the fundamental principles of international law and there is nothing extraordinary about the draft peace treaty. Therefore, meetings of this kind give Armenia some additional illusions that it will be able to achieve some of its goals in negotiations with Azerbaijan," Report's director said.
