Azerbaijan’s exit from PACE won’t affect the country in any way, but it may have catastrophic consequences for the Assembly itself in the future, political scientist, director of the Center for Political Research Sergey Markov told the Russian bureau of Report.

He was commenting on the suspension of cooperation between the Azerbaijani delegation and PACE for an indefinite period.

“The main reason for the crisis in relations between Azerbaijan and PACE is the dishonesty of a number of Assembly deputies. Under the influence of France, they made several pro-Armenian, anti-Azerbaijani and false statements,” he said.

According to the political scientist, in general, the future of the Assembly is vague: "PACE essentially simply duplicates the activities of the European Parliament. And if only EU member states remain there, then there is simply no point in PACE’s activities."
