Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for abandoning the requirement that a candidate must receive 50% of the votes + one vote (abbreviated as the “50+1” system) to win the presidential election, Report informs via Turkish media.

“If the procedure for electing the candidate with the majority of votes is adopted, then presidential elections will be faster, less labor-intensive and will not lead to wrong paths,” Erdogan said.

According to the Turkish leader, the current Turkish constitution contains the “spirit of a putschist mentality,” and the goal is to create a new basic law for the country.

“We started work on a new constitution several times in parliament, but it always remained unfinished due to obstacles from the opposition and their failure to fulfill their promises,” Erdogan said.
