The inaugural edition of the Black Sea Theatre Festival is planned to take place in Varna in late September, according to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

The festival is scheduled to take place between September 24 and 28 to entertain the city's guests and to extend the tourist season. Visitors will be able to watch Bulgarian plays that are not on the Varna Summer International Theatre Festival's bill. Negotiations are underway to add titles from Romania and Italy too.

The Black Sea Theatre Festival will be competitive. Its concept has been developed after consultations with specialists by the theatre historian and stage director Elitsa Mateeva. The forum will also offer meetings between the audience and the creative teams behind the performances. The forum organizers will invite Zachary Karabashliev, Maria Kasimova-Moase, Yana Borisova, Aleksandar Sekulov, Dimitar Marinov and Galin Stoev for the creative workshops.

The festival will be unveiled with a performance of Alma Mahler directed by Deyan Proykovski from North Macedonia and based on the novel by Sasho Dimoski. Alma Mahler was the wife of composer Gustav Mahler. She inspired Oskar Kokoschka among other great artists.
