Egyptian Middle East News Agency (MENA) published an article highlighting the 150th anniversary of the Azerbaijani national press.
The article spotlights “Akinchi” newspaper, the first publication in Azerbaijani founded by prominent intellectual and educator Hasan bey Zardabi, and its significant role in society.
The article draws parallels between the early press in Egypt and Azerbaijan, noting that while the Egyptian press began a few years earlier, both aimed to educate their people and promote national identity.
Despite its short lifespan, “Akinchi” played a vital role in shaping Azerbaijani journalism and contributed to the rise of a generation of thinkers and writers who influenced the country's modern cultural identity. It served as an encyclopedic source, introducing Azerbaijani readers to world history, culture, and economics, and acted as a cultural bridge between nations.
One issue, for example, dated August 5, 1875, featured information about the construction of the Suez Canal and its expected impact on regional trade.
The article also notes that “Akinchi” inspired later Azerbaijani publications like Molla Nasreddin, Ziya, Kaspi, Keshkul , Hayat, and Fuyuzat, which continued promoting enlightenment ideas.
It concludes by emphasizing the strong link between the development of modern Azerbaijani media and National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who have always valued freedom of the press and supported media progress. The article also highlights AZERTAC, celebrating its 105th anniversary, as a pillar of the country's media and journalism.
