The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) convened for Annual Meeting at the UNOG (Palais des Nations) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Themed “The Human Rights of Women and Girls: Promoting Gender Equality and the Role of NHRIs”, the event welcomed more than 250 representatives from National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), UN agencies, States and civil society.
Elgun Safarov, a member of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), delivered a video address at the conference.
In his address, Elgun Safarov emphasized that the conflicts taking place in the world result in higher levels of gender-based violence against women and girls. He spoke of the fate of civilians, prisoners and missing persons, especially women and children, who have suffered from landmines as a result of wars. Simultaneously, he highlighted importance of the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring gender equality and human rights.
