A delegation from Azerbaijan, comprising Sabuhi Orujov, Head of the Seafarers’ Documentation Department, and Rustam Aslanli, Senior Specialist at the Training and Certification Center of the State Maritime and Port Agency, participated in an international seminar titled “Identification of Specific Competences for Seafarers Operating Ships Using Alternative Fuels and Energy Systems,” organized by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Lisbon, Portugal.

During the seminar, participants discussed adapting the provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to new technologies, developing updated curricula for educational institutions and training centers, and implementing regulatory and practical measures to enhance specialized training for seafarers. Presentations covered international practices regarding safety requirements, risk assessment, bunkering operations, and the management of energy systems using hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and other alternative fuels.

Sabuhi Orujov expressed confidence that Azerbaijan’s participation would foster stronger cooperation with EMSA and provide valuable opportunities to learn advanced practical approaches in the maritime sector.
