The European Commission will present proposals in February to reform the EU so that it can function effectively after enlargement, the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, announced in her speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Report informs.

Next month, the Commission will set out its ideas in a report to the European Parliament and Council ahead of a leaders’ debate hosted by Belgium, she said.

The head of the EC reminded that at the end of last year the EU decided to begin negotiations on membership with Ukraine and Moldova, and Georgia was granted candidate status. In addition, the EU is negotiating the accession of Western Balkan states, she added.

Previously, the EU expressed doubts about the possibility of the union functioning in an expanded format according to the current rules. In particular, the possible abolition of the principle of unanimous decision-making on key issues was discussed.
