Former Turkish environment minister nominated as Istanbul mayor candidate

Former Minister of Environment, Urban Development and Climate Change of Türkiye Murat Kurum has been nominated as a candidate for mayor of Istanbul by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Report informs.

 

Municipal elections in Türkiye will be held on March 31, 2024.

 

47-year-old Kurum headed the Ministry of Environment in 2018-2023. Last May he was elected to parliament and heads the commission on environmental issues.

 

President Erdogan intends to announce his candidate for mayor of Ankara on January 15.

 

The current opposition mayors of Istanbul and Ankara, Ekrem Imamoglu and Mansur Yavas, will run again in the March elections.
