Individuals planning an attack on a member of a religious community operating in Azerbaijan have been apprehended, Report informs, citing the State Security Service.
The State Security Service (SSS) told Report the detained individuals are Agil Aslanov (a Georgian citizen), who was involved in drug trafficking, and Jeyhun Ismayilov.
According to case materials, in September 2024, during a trip to a third country, Aslanov met with special service officers of that country through an acquaintance. They tasked him with organizing an assassination attempt on a religious community member in Azerbaijan for $200,000. They showed him photographs and provided information about the target.
Aslanov was also instructed to gather and transmit necessary intelligence about the target, including his workplace, for which he received an advance payment of $2,000.
Upon arrival in Baku, Aslanov recruited Azerbaijani citizen Jeyhun Ismayilov to assist in the operation, promising him financial compensation. Together, they collected information about the religious community member and sent coordinates of his residence and workplace to the foreign intelligence service representative via a mobile application.
The State Security Service has initiated a criminal case under Articles 28, 214.2.1, 274, 276, and other articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. The court has ordered the detention of both Agil Aslanov and Jeyhun Ismayilov as a preventive measure.
