Representatives of international legal community to meet in Azerbaijan for “Law & Climate” conference

In honor of Azerbaijan's designation of 2024 as the “Green World Solidarity Year” and ahead of COP29, the Azerbaijan Judges' Union and the Supreme Court will co-host an international conference titled "Law & Climate" on September 6, 2024, according to the Azerbaijan Judges' Union.

The conference aims to draw global attention to international climate change processes, enhance awareness of existing legal frameworks in this area, and address the impact of climate change on human rights. It will also foster international cooperation through the exchange of perspectives among judges, lawyers, and experts from various countries.

The conference will feature contributions from judges, lawyers, legal scholars, and other legal professionals. Discussions will cover the significance and expectations of hosting COP29 in Azerbaijan, the impact of climate change on various legal fields, ongoing court disputes and legal remedies, and the responsibilities of business entities. Notable speakers will include Eva Annette Magnusson (Sweden), Wendy Jane Miles (Great Britain), Lorena Zenteno (Chile), Sadiga Mehdiyeva (Azerbaijan), among other experts on relevant topics.

The conference will host distinguished guests, including Duro Sessa, President of the International Association of Judges, and Giacomo Oberto, Secretary General. Other notable attendees will include Basri Bağcı, Vice-President of the Constitutional Court of Türkiye; Fatih Mehmet Alkış, Member of the Council of State (Danistay) of Türkiye; Damir Kontrec, Chairman of the Croatian Association of Judges and Chairman of the Civil Department of the Supreme Court; Saken Abdolla, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Judges Association and Supreme Court Judge; Dilara Arstanbaeva, Chairman of the Kyrgyz Republic Judges Association and Supreme Court Judge; Victor Sandu, Chairman of the Association of Judges of Moldova; and Adrija Kasakovska, Chairman of the Association of Judges of Latvia. Judges and legal experts from Uzbekistan, Georgia, Lithuania, and other countries are also expected to participate.
