The agreements reached at the August 8 meeting in Washington between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the United States strengthen Baku’s position, including in regional trade, and also reinforce the alliance between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, Professor Mehmet Yüce of the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences at Uludağ University, Türkiye told Sabah newspaper.
He noted that the statements made at the White House allow Azerbaijan to realize its potential as a regional logistics and energy hub. “Through the Zangezur corridor, Azerbaijan will begin to earn significant revenue from transit. At the same time, new opportunities will emerge for investment in Azerbaijan’s economy, including the liberated territories of the republic,” the Turkish expert wrote. He described Azerbaijan’s non-oil sector as “a serious field for attracting Western investment.”
The expert added: “The Zangezur corridor will provide an impetus not only for Azerbaijan but for the entire region, including Armenia’s economy. The communication between Azerbaijan’s western regions and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic will fundamentally change the balance of power in the South Caucasus.”
Yüce emphasized that on August 8, the West officially recognized the results of Azerbaijan’s historic victory in the 44-day Patriotic War.
Touching upon the implications of the Washington meeting for Türkiye, the Uludağ University professor noted that the opening of the Zangezur corridor will have no negative impact on Ankara’s position. “On the contrary, Türkiye will strengthen its stance by gaining access to the Turkic countries of Central Asia,” he stressed.
The professor also drew attention to risks associated with the pressures exerted on Yerevan and Baku by forces opposing the opening of the Zangezur corridor.
