Azerbaijani envoy participates in Seimas session over Latvian independence restoration anniversary

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Riga Elnur Sultanov took part in a ceremonial session of the Saeima (parliament) on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence, Report informs via the Azerbaijani Embassy in Latvia.

"On the occasion of the 35th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Independence of the Republic of Latvia, Ambassador of Azerbaijan Elnur Sultanov participated in a flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument and attended the ceremonial sitting of the Saeima. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the people of Latvia!," the embassy wrote on X.

Latvia declared its independence from the Russian Empire on November 18, 1918. In 1940, the country was occupied and annexed by the Soviet Union. For decades, the Latvian state existed only de jure. Fifty years later, on May 4, the Supreme Council of the Latvian SSR adopted the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia. This day is considered the beginning of the country's exit from the USSR and is celebrated annually as Independence Restoration Day.
