Azerbaijan, UN discuss prospects for cooperation

Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met Wednesday with Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The meeting saw discussions on the current state and prospects for relations between Azerbaijan and the UN, preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency priorities.

Highlighting the importance of Azerbaijan’s role in multilateral diplomacy and in the UN institutions, the UN Deputy Secretary-General commended Azerbaijan’s successful efforts to host the COP29 Conference.

The sides also underlined the significance of the adopted the UN Summit of the Future Outcome Document, reflecting such key elements as peace and security, new technologies, future of the financial architecture.

Referring to Azerbaijan’s progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the parties hailed the significant development in this regard.

FM Bayramov highlighted the negotiation process within Azerbaijan’s Presidency of the COP29. He pointed out the importance of consensus for determining a new quantitative financial target for meeting the required financial means in the fight against climate change. In this vein, the sides stressed the importance of assistance from the UN and international financing institutions.

Jeyhun Bayramov also informed the UN official about the support of 14 initiatives put forward by the COP29 Presidency, covering various topics.

The meeting also dealt with other issues of mutual interest.
