Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Rabab Fatima, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, as well as Azerbaijan's presidency of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and preparations for COP29.
Noting that Azerbaijan pays special attention to the cooperation with the UN and its institutions, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov mentioned the country’s active participation in the projects implemented by the Organization.
The parties emphasized the importance of taking appropriate steps and joining efforts with other member states to protect peace and security in the region and globally, as well as to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Jeyhun Bayramov expressed Azerbaijan’s full readiness for coordinated action aimed at addressing global economic, social, cultural and humanitarian challenges.
Providing an insight into the preparations for the session and ongoing negotiation process within the Azerbaijan’s Presidency of COP29, Minister Bayramov underscored that Azerbaijan is guided by the principle of inclusiveness and focuses on supporting the efforts of least developed, landlocked and small island countries to combat climate change.
UN’s High Representative Rabab Fatima commended Azerbaijan's collaboration and participation in relevant projects. She expressed her confidence that joint initiatives would contribute to enhancing transport opportunities of the landlocked countries in the region. Simultaneously, she noted that the steps taken towards the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially the work done within the COP29 presidency, testify to Azerbaijan's successful participation in the Organization’s activities.
The parties also deliberated on other issues of mutual interest.
