Azerbaijan submits formal application for BRICS membership

“Azerbaijan has submitted a formal application to join BRICS,” Aykhan Hajizada, Spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told AZERTAC.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization founded in 2006, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Since 2009, BRICS has convened annually, evolving into a significant geopolitical bloc.

Notably, the Joint Declaratıon of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Republic of China on the establishment of a strategic partnership was adopted during the Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Astana.

According to provision 4.5 of the declaration, Azerbaijan expresses its desire to join BRICS, with China welcoming Azerbaijan’s participation in BRICS cooperation.
