In his press statement on August 4, 2024, European Union (EU) Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar made discriminatory remarks against Azerbaijanis who interfered in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan and were expelled from Armenia,” the Western Azerbaijan Community said in a statement.

“Speaking about the problem of resettlement in the region and the right of return, Tovio Klaar applied this right exclusively to Armenians who voluntarily resettled from Azerbaijan, and denied the existence of such a right for Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia. Not content with this, Klaar emphasized that Armenians resettled from the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan represent a special case.

Apparently, the EU representative invented "power" to give people rights based on their ethnicity. This attitude of Mr. Klaar towards the forcibly expelled Azerbaijanis from Armenia is proof of discrimination against himself and the institution he represents on ethnic and religious grounds. The special emphasis of the EU representative on the problem of the Karabakh Armenians is an indicator of the inability of this institution to understand the resolution of the conflict and the restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. All this, as well as the EU's allocation of military assistance to Armenia, closing the country to the fact that this country receives and spends a large amount of funds on weapons through sanctioned smuggling and the sale of large quantities of weapons. The supply of weapons to Armenia by EU member states such as France serves to create tension in the region.

The Western Azerbaijan Community strongly condemns the EU official's racist discrimination against Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia, his interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan and a statement that serves to create tension in the region. The Community asks the EU to respect the principle of equality of human rights in accordance with Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to end discrimination against Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia and to respect their right of return,” the statement added.
