Samir Nuriyev, Head of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, met with Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
During the meeting, Samir Nuriyev highlighted the preparatory work carried out for the COP29 under the leadership of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. Noting that Azerbaijan has recently announced its COP29-related initiatives, Chairman of the Organizing Committee Samir Nuriyev underscored that the COP29 President-Designate had addressed a letter to all parties to the Framework Convention featuring the plans and expectations from this momentous event.
The head of the Presidential Administration hailed the activity of the COP29 Presidency, noting that it studies the stance of all states and other stakeholders, as well as participates in vital international events. He underlined that the country would spare no effort to reach a consensus between the developed and developing countries on the new climate finance.
Samir Nuriyev also briefed the events to be held in Azerbaijan within the preparation for COP29, the conditions to be created for the delegations and other participants of the conference, support for civil society's participation in COP29 and the work done in the field of communication.
Simon Stiell commended the work carried out by Azerbaijan towards successful hosting of the COP29, as well as providing support to small island states, which has been put on Azerbaijan’s agenda. The Executive Secretary underscored the UN’s readiness to provide every assistance to Azerbaijan in organizing COP29.
