11th Global Baku Forum features “From Good Words to Good Deeds: What Objectives can be set for COP29” panel session

The fourth panel session on the theme “From Good Words to Good Deeds: What Objectives can be set for COP29” has been held as part of the 11th Global Baku Forum.

 

The session was moderated by Jean Baderschneider, Non-Executive Director at Fortescue Metals & Fortescue Industries, CEO of the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery, former Vice-President of ExxonMobil.

 

Addressing the session, Administrator of the UN Development Program Achim Steiner emphasized that the COP29 would make a fundamental contribution to the steps aimed at addressing climate change. He highlighted the imperative to attract funding here and mentioned several countries which have already switched to renewable energy.

 

Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director of the Directorate of Global Partnership and External Relations of the UN Industrial Development Organization Fatou Haidara said that COP29 faces the solution of very challenging issues, noting that one of them is climate financing. She emphasised the need to develop the mechanism of energy transition.

 

Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) Maimunah Mohd Sharif also shared her views on climate changes, saying that natural disasters posed by climate changes lead to financial loss. She expressed her optimism that COP29 will ensure a plan of action at the local level, whereas the local plans identified by each country would contribute to the 2030 Agenda.

 

María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés President of the 73rd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations expressed her belief that at the end of COP29, the signing of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be witnessed.

 

Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera, as well as President of the Liberal International, Special Envoy for Climate Change of the Kingdom of Morocco Hakima El Haite, President of the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) Sir Alok Sharma described COP29 as a major platform for thinking, which would play a decisive role in the transition to green energy.

 

Chief Executive Officer of COP29, Deputy Azerbaijani Minister of Energy Elnur Soltanov highlighted the preparation efforts of Azerbaijan as the host-country for COP29.
