Armenians hope there will be pressure on Azerbaijan and official Baku will give up, but they should know that this will not happen, Farid Shafiyev, Chairman of the Board of the Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center), told XQ.
Speaking about the reasons why the Armenians do not accept the food sent not only by Azerbaijan but also by Russia, he said that the issue here is not humanitarian aid, but the main intention of the Armenians is to control the Lachin road: "After losing Shusha and Lachin in 1992, our strategic situation deteriorated. The Armenians deployed the military in Karabakh precisely through Lachin and then attacked Kalbajar from two directions and occupied it as well. In other words, Lachin is a very important area due to its geographical position."
The head of the AIR Center pointed out that the Armenian residents of Karabakh expect support from the world without accepting any aid: "They thought that even if they lose, there are Armenians in Karabakh, who will support them through the Lachin road, and they will send soldiers there as they wish. However, Armenia's plans came to naught when Azerbaijan built a border crossing point. Once the post was established, the dynamic changed completely. That is why they are not receiving any help now, and unfortunately, there are forces in the world that support this step. The Armenians want to have control on the road to Lachin, and then they would accept something. But they should know that they will always be monitored by Azerbaijani customs and border guards in Lachin, they will be inspected, and they will have to pay taxes. This is the reality, and even if Armenians don't want it, and it won't change."
