In AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” column, we explore the Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum Complex in Shamakhi, a remarkable gem of Azerbaijani architecture from the 19th century. Far more than a collection of stone tombs, this complex serves as a historical chronicle of Shirvan Khan Mustafa Khan’s family and lineage.

Constructed between 1816 and 1865, the seven octagonal mausoleums are built from hewn stone, reflecting Azerbaijan’s architectural traditions. The tombs honor notable figures, including Mustafa Khan’s mother Bibikhanim Beyim, his wives Asiya Beyim and Khan Bike, and his son Azad Khan. One mausoleum bears the name of master craftsman Taghi, a testament to the high regard for artisans of the era.

The Yeddi Gumbaz complex is a captivating blend of architectural and historical significance, making it a must-visit for historians and tourists eager to explore Shamakhi’s ancient heritage.
