African officials urged world leaders to honor climate change commitments at the conference of Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) held within COP29 in Baku.
They demanded concrete solutions to the scale and increasing threat of climate change in Africa, at a time when the impacts of climate change are intensifying, while global response is still too weak.
The speakers underscored that their continent has been severely impacted by climate crisis, including severe droughts and devastating floods which reduced harvests, triggering displacement of millions of people. They stressed that rich countries, which are responsible for the largest share of emissions, have repeatedly delayed the implementation of important measures and failed to fulfil their promises of support.
African leaders described the need for climate justice as urgent, which can no longer be ignored. They called for an urgent need for fair and accessible climate financing for developing countries as a priority and necessary condition to enhance resilience and adaptation.
