At a critical moment when influence maps are being redrawn at the crossroads of East and West, the signing of a peace document between President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan in the White House, with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump, is considered a turning point in the history of a decades-long conflict, according to an article published in the Saudi Arabian newspaper “Asharq Al-Awsat,” based in London.

The article, addressing the new realities in the region, notes that the South Caucasus, regarded as a significant region at the intersection of energy and influence spheres between Russia, Europe, Iran, and Türkiye, has been shaped by the agreement dubbed the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.” This agreement not only halts the confrontation between the parties but also creates exceptional economic and security opportunities for the U.S. to expand its strategic influence in the South Caucasus. It is also emphasized that the energy-rich South Caucasus has been unable to realize its potential due to the prolonged conflict.

At the same time, it is highlighted that while the Washington Agreement has been positively received by most states, the positions of various circles in Russia and Iran have been ambivalent.

The article further states that the Washington Agreement could serve as a gateway for Azerbaijan to integrate into broader regional cooperation mechanisms, open new energy and trade routes, and strengthen Azerbaijan’s role as an economic bridge between Asia and Europe. These economic opportunities are as significant as security factors, as this route connects Azerbaijan to global trade networks.

It is emphasized in the article that Azerbaijan’s firm stance against the downing of its passenger plane by Russia’s air defense system, as well as growing discontent in Armenia over Moscow’s economic and security dominance, paves the way for stronger integration in the South Caucasus. It is expected that relations between Armenia and Georgia will be further strengthened. Azerbaijan’s role in resolving broader regional issues has also increased, as demonstrated by its mediation in meetings between Israel and Syria, showcasing its influence beyond its geographical borders.
