The opening ceremony of the FIDE Women's World Cup has been held in Batumi, Georgia.
The event was attended by state and government officials, President of the Georgian Chess Federation Akaki Iashvili, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, as well as other distinguished guests.
FIDE Vice President and President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation Mahir Mammadov was also present at the ceremony.
In his opening address, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich stated that the FIDE Women’s World Cup is one of the most significant and prestigious competitions on the global chess calendar, uniting the world’s strongest and most accomplished female chess players under one roof.
Other notable speakers reaffirmed Georgia’s valuable contribution to the global advancement and promotion of chess, and underscored its esteemed position within the international chess community.
A drawing of lots was then held to determine which pieces the chess players would use in the first round.
Following the speeches, the audience enjoyed performances featuring the best of Georgian music and dance.
A total of four chess players – Govhar Beydullayeva, Ulviyya Fataliyeva, Khanim Balajayeva, and Gulnar Mammadova – are representing Azerbaijan in the competition.
Hosted at the Grand Bellagio Hotel, the 107-player knockout tournament offers a $691,250 prize fund, with $50,000 awarded to the winner, and three spots available in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
