The fire that broke out in June at the Karaturun South field in western Kazakhstan has been extinguished, Report informs, citing Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy.
"A well fire that lasted more than 6 months was extinguished on December 25, 2023, at the Karaturun Yuzhny field, developed by Buzachi Oil LLP in the Mangistau region," the statement says.
It was noted that to extinguish the fire, specialists drilled emergency wells with subsequent injection of killing solution.
The fire at the field began on June 9 during the drilling of a well. The flame reached 10 meters in height.
Local environmental activists have repeatedly drawn attention to the fire problem. According to activists, burning at the well led to the release of methane, which poisoned the environment.
