The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) of the Republic of Azerbaijan conducted a workshop aimed at enhancing the legal framework related to the environmental protection.
The workshop brought together the representatives from various government institutions to analyze the current legislation and regulatory frameworks governing the targeted sectors, identified by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources - agriculture, water, and coastal areas as priority sectors for comprehensive legal assessment and improvement.
During the workshop, participants engaged in detailed discussions on the development of new legislative acts. The primary objective was to create an enabling environment and enhance adaptation planning in Azerbaijan, aligning with the country's commitment to sustainable development.
A key focus of the discussions was on climate risk management. Participants emphasized the critical need for National Adaptation Plans and Strategies to address climate challenges effectively. The workshop highlighted the importance of fostering an exchange of experiences among stakeholders and establishing adaptation-focused working groups within relevant institutions.
The workshop, organized by the Green Climate Fund financed National Adaptation Plan (NAP) project implemented by UNDP, seeks to assist the government in enhancing governing processes and institutional arrangements. These arrangements are aimed at overseeing and coordinating adaptation-related issues across multiple stakeholders, including the private sector, women, youth and vulnerable groups.
In an effort to integrate climate considerations into national legislation, the workshop discussed and analyzed how to find a common ground between different government institutions and stakeholders. Moreover, the participants discussed the establishment of monitoring and evaluation systems that align with national legislation.
The conducted workshop was aligned with the climate change agenda of Azerbaijan, and UNDP stands ready to assist further the Government of Azerbaijan in relevant initiatives.
