Italy has lost approximately 652,000 residents since 2020 as more Italians have chosen to live abroad, up 11.8% compared to 2020, according to ANSA.

Today, over 6.1 million Italians reside abroad said Migrantes Foundation.

"The only Italy that grows continues to be the one that has chosen to live abroad", the study noted.

The foundation's research stressed the negative impact of emigration on low-income areas of Italy, calling for more attention "at all levels to reintroduce policies aimed at giving newfound attraction" to specific contexts. Overall last year 89,462 Italians moved abroad, up 9.1% on 2022.

In particular youths, young adults and Italians over-65 chose to leave the country permanently, according to the study.

The regions with the highest number of emigres in 2024 were Sicily, followed by Lombardy and Veneto.

A reported 45.8% of Italians registered as living abroad are from the South - over 2.8 million, including 956,000 who hail from the islands, said Migrantes.
