Record-breaking surge observed in water surface area of Sarsang Reservoir

The Sarsang Reservoir, nestled in the water-rich region of Karabakh, has witnessed a record-breaking increase in its water surface area compared to previous years, according to the latest data released by the Space Agency (Azercosmos) under the Digital Development and Transport Ministry of Azerbaijan, Report informs.

The reservoir's water surface has reached an impressive 1,065 hectares in 2024, marking the highest level in the past decade.

Despite fluctuations in the reservoir's water levels between 2014 and 2023, the satellite imagery analysis conducted this year reveals a remarkable recovery. The Sarsang Reservoir, which has long been subjected to negative environmental impacts, is now showing signs of ecosystem restoration, a process that began last year.

As the largest water basin in Karabakh, the Sarsang Reservoir holds immense strategic significance for the Karabakh economic region and its surrounding areas. Its revitalization not only benefits the local ecosystem but also holds promise for the region's overall development and prosperity.
