8 die after bus overturns in South Africa

Eight people were killed and scores of others injured after a bus they were riding in overturned Saturday near Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, Xinhua reports citing authorities.

 

The passengers were travelling from the province's Moses Mabhida stadium, where the ruling African National Congress (ANC) launched its manifesto for upcoming elections.

 

"Police and various emergency services are at the scene of the bus accident on the R33 between Vryheid and Paulpietersburg in KwaZulu-Natal Province," the police in a statement. "According to a preliminary report, the bus was coming from the Moses Mabhinda stadium when it overturned. Eight people have so far been confirmed dead and scores injured. Those that are injured have been taken to various hospitals in the area for medical care."

 

The ANC said those involved in the accident were its members from Mpumalanga Province.

 

"There are reports of several fatalities and a number of comrades in critical condition. It is a true tragedy that there are such a loss of lives after such a memorable day. Their selflessness and commitment to building a better future for generations to come will forever be remembered," the ANC said in a statement.

 

The police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
