A fatal encounter involving French law enforcement occurred on April 12 in Le Moule, Guadeloupe, leaving one person dead. Preliminary findings suggest that officers initially attempted to subdue the suspect using a non-lethal electroshock device. However, the situation escalated when a French gendarme discharged a firearm, resulting in the individual’s death due to sustained injuries. Prosecutors were dispatched to the scene, and an initial investigation was launched, with the case later transferred to the Pointe-à-Pitre investigative unit. The gendarme who fired the weapon was detained as part of the inquiry. Following the incident, tensions rose in the area, with reports of clashes between residents and police.

These developments were documented in a report prepared by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) regarding the incident and subsequent public reactions.

The report states that the incident was strongly condemned in a statement issued by the Guadeloupe-based organization “United Against Gendarmerie Violence.” The statement asserted that Liber Argelier was killed by unjustified gunfire from military police, describing the case as “another example of state violence.”

The organization linked the incident to previous similar fatalities, arguing that it reflects a systemic pattern and accusing law enforcement of abusing their authority. It called for a full and transparent investigation to determine why the shot was fired and whether the use of force was lawful.

The statement also urged public action to ensure justice, accountability, and the prevention of similar cases. It extended condolences to the family of the deceased, noting that the incident has generated significant concern in Guadeloupean society.
