“The participation of the Government of Azerbaijan in the recently created Board of Peace, an international body led by the United States under the presidency of President Trump is significant,” Paolo von Schirach, President of the Global Policy Institute and Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Bay Atlantic University in Washington D.C., told AZERTAC.
According to him, the opportunity to create the board of peace, as we all know, stems from the American efforts to end the conflict in Gaza. “The Board of Peace with participants from different regions, different geographic parts of the world, could be brand new development,” he noted.
“Until now, the only thing we have the international community has to deal with threats to the peace, peacekeeping, and what have you, is the United Nations, which is led by the Security Council of the United Nations. But we also know that because of political contrasts, it's very difficult for the Security Council of the United Nations to operate,” the American expert mentioned.
“It is not entirely clear what the mandate is, what the jurisdiction is, what the tools are going to be, and what kind of enforcement tools the Board of Peace will have to stop conflicts, to enforce peace, to protect or uphold international stability. But the Government of Azerbaijan has quite a bit of experience. It has been in a locked-in conflict for decades with its neighbor Armenia for decades. Azerbaijan managed to regain full control over its territory and therefore its sovereignty. Therefore, I think it stands to reason that Azerbaijan, given its hands-on, direct lived experience of trying to establish peace, a lasting peace which has to be a just peace that makes everybody comfortable. I think Baku brings to the Board of Peace knowledge, experience, and a different angle. So, all in all, it is most likely that the Government of Azerbaijan will be able to contribute significantly to the effective functioning of the newly created Board of Peace inspired by American leadership under President Trump,” Paolo von Schirach added.
