“This (Khankendi) is our historical land, and I am confident that there is no one in Azerbaijan who is unaware of this. The world also knows that the city of Khankendi has been an ancient settlement of Azerbaijan, and its name reflects this—Khan's village,” stated President Ilham Aliyev during his meeting with the teaching staff and students of Garabagh University.

Recalling that the subsequent occupation was effectively conditioned by the treaties of “Kurakchay,” “Gulustan,” and “Turkmenchay” signed in the early 19th century, the head of state noted: “Because Armenians, who had never lived on the land of Karabakh, began to be relocated here from Iran and Eastern Anatolia after these treaties. This is a fact, it is precise history. Armenia and Armenian scholars have always attempted to distort history and create a fabricated narrative, and through their lobbying networks, they have managed to mislead the international community to some extent.”
