The natural resources of the region were looted and sold, refugees of Armenian descent from Syria were purposely settled here. Lachin district, located in the mountainous area of Azerbaijan, received the status of an administrative territorial unit in 1930. Along with Kalbajar, Gubadli, Khojaly, Shusha, Khojavend districts, it also borders Armenia. Lachin is located in a strategic area with fertile lands and a rich forest massif.
On May 18, 1992, when the Armenian army occupied the Lachin region, a large part of the Armenian armed forces entered our territory through the Lachin corridor. As a result of the occupation of the region, there was a geographical connection between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. During the occupation, Armenian soldiers killed more than 300 Azerbaijani soldiers and civilians, and more than 79 thousand Lachin people were settled in different cities and regions of our republic. During the 28-year occupation, Armenians caused terrible destruction in Lachin region as well as in other occupied regions. Houses, buildings, social facilities were completely destroyed. Along with implementing the policy of aggression, Armenia has committed another war crime. The natural resources of the region were looted and sold, and refugees of Armenian descent from Syria were purposefully settled here. Earlier, on November 9, the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan liberated the villages of Gulaburd, Safiyan and Türklar in Lachin from occupation.
On August 26, 2022, the city of Lachin, the villages of Zabux and Sus were taken under control.
On November 26, 2020, the medal "for the liberation of Lachin" was established. By the orders of the President Mr. Ilham Aliyev, 8397 servicemen of the Azerbaijan Armed Forces were awarded with the medal "For the liberation of Lachin".

Muzaffar Supreme Commander-in-Chief President Mr. Ilham Aliyev visited Lachin district three times after liberation from occupation. During his visit, our head of state raised the flag of Azerbaijan in Lachin and participated in the foundation laying and opening ceremonies of many social facilities. Soon, all the people of Lachin will return to their native places, to Lachin, which is more prosperous and beautiful than before."
