Treason trial begins for accused spy in Azerbaijan

The trial of Ivan Nikolayevich Svetlichny, who was arrested and charged with treason following an investigation by the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, has commenced at the Baku Court of Grave Crimes. The preparatory hearing was presided over by Judge Aygun Gurbanova.

According to Report, Svetlichny, an Azerbaijani citizen, is accused under Article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code. He is suspected of deliberately committing treason against the state security, sovereignty, and defense capabilities of Azerbaijan in the form of espionage and by carrying out the orders of foreign special service bodies.

The specific actions he is alleged to have committed will be revealed during the next court hearing when the indictment is announced.

The next hearing in the trial is scheduled for February 3.
