Azerbaijani representative elected Vice-Chair of UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

An Azerbaijani representative, Doctor of Philosophy in Law, Associate Professor Nadir Adilov, has been elected as Vice-Chair of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), a member representing the Central and Eastern European region.

The 78th session of the Committee held in Geneva also saw the new chair and vice-chairs elected:

• Chair - Preeti Saran (India – Asia and Pacific region)

• Vice-Chairs - Nadir Adilov (Azerbaijan – Central and Eastern Europe), Giuseppe Palmisano (Italy – Western Europe and other countries), Asraf Ally Caunhye (Mauritania – Africa region).

According to the committee's procedural rules, elections for each committee take place every two years.

The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) is the body of 18 independent experts that monitors the implementation of the provisions of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights by the States Parties.

With this appointment, Azerbaijan for the first time gained the right to be represented in the committee's leadership structures.

Azerbaijan’s Nadir Adilov was first elected to the 18-member committee for 2021–2024, and was later re-elected to the committee for 2025–2028 at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meeting. He is also the Chairman of the Board of the Mediation Council and Deputy Chairman of the Turkic World Mediators Union.
